King and Borland Regain Rights to ‘Dungeons and Dreamers’

I enjoyed reading Brad King and John Borland’s excellent social history, Dungeons and Dreamers: The Rise of Computer Gaming from Geek to Chic. As the story goes, King and Borland were tossing around the idea of a book exploring the history of gaming, sketching out the basic outline on a napkin in a San Francisco bar one night. Shortly thereafter, Osborne/McGraw-Hill called about writing a book on gaming … and they were ready with a sales pitch and synopsis. The result was an excellent book focusing on Richard Garriott, his company Origin, and the rise of the gaming industry.

I caught up with their book’s site recently and discovered they have re-acquired rights to the manuscript over the summer. This basically means they can re-issue the book or re-release it in different formats. It will be interesting to see what they do. They’ve been dropping hints over at their website: www.dungeonsanddreamers.com.
